CFD-Analysis

for a dam rehabilitation project

As part of a dam rehabilitation project in California (USA), we were able to contribute with our comprehensive CFD expertise. This included a detailed CFD analysis of fixed cone valves and butterfly valves, which a renowned manufacturer specially customised.

Cone valves and their importance for energy dissipation

Fixed cone valves, which contribute to efficient energy dissipation due to their free outlet, are crucial for regulating the flow, emergency drawdown processes in dams or as a turbine bypass.

CFD analysis with high-precision mesh structures

For the analysis, mainly structured meshes with hexahedron elements were generated, in particular to accurately map the complex geometries around the flap plates of the butterfly valves. This detailed refinement enabled us to precisely resolve all relevant 3D structures for the numerical simulation.

Our results helped the operator optimise the hydraulic design of the system and prove its emergency emptying capability.

Additional insights gained from the analysis

The results of our analysis also provided further valuable insights into the mechanical loads on the valves and the necessary ventilation requirements, which represented considerable added value over and above the original scope of the project.
