In the latest issue of the internationally published trade magazine ZEK International, a technical article by Jaberg & Partner has been released. Under the title “Hydraulic Optimization and Model Testing for the Refurbishment of a Vertical Kaplan Turbine”, we present our work on the modernization of an Indian run‑of‑river hydropower plant. The article provides a concise overview of our engineering activities – from the comprehensive CFD study and design optimization to the experimental model test.

Several years ago, we were commissioned by Flovel Energy to develop a new vertical Kaplan runner and new guide vanes as part of the rehabilitation of an Indian run‑of‑river hydropower plant. Based on a detailed CFD analysis, an optimized turbine design was developed, whose excellent performance was subsequently confirmed through model testing.
In the meantime, the first two units have been successfully commissioned and are operating to the full satisfaction of the client. The on‑site acceptance test for Unit 1 confirmed the expected performance of the turbine. The third unit is currently in the final stage of assembly and is scheduled to be commissioned in mid‑2026. The technical article summarizes the successful progress of this rehabilitation project.
