Viennahydro 2026 will explore the role of hydropower in Europe's clean energy transition and the associated technical, economic and environmental challenges. Jaberg & Partner will contribute to the conference with a technical presentation by Stefan Höller.
The presentation, entitled “Customised design optimisation of a Francis turbine for the operation at reduced head and flow due to climatic conditions”, addresses the customised design optimisation of a Francis turbine for operation under changing head and flow conditions resulting from climatic changes.
Europe's clean energy transition requires long-term strategies that balance climate objectives, energy security, market dynamics and environmental protection. As Europe's largest source of renewable electricity, hydropower plays a central role in this transition. Its contribution to power system flexibility, energy storage and long-term resilience is becoming increasingly important.

Viennahydro 2026 provides a platform for interdisciplinary exchange between researchers, policymakers, industry representatives and other stakeholders. Key topics include the strategic development of hydropower, research-based insights and practical approaches to meeting the challenges of the energy transition towards 2050.
Climate-related changes in available head and flow present new challenges for hydropower plant operators. Maintaining efficient plant operation under changing hydraulic boundary conditions requires detailed analysis and targeted optimisation measures.
In his presentation, Stefan Höller will discuss approaches to the customised runner optimisation of a Francis turbine for these changing operating conditions. The contribution highlights the importance of engineering expertise and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in adapting hydraulic machinery to future operational requirements.
We look forward to Viennahydro 2026, exchanging knowledge with international experts and discussing the future of hydropower.
